The inspiration for this album came from a book I was reading on mediaeval music. I noticed that many pieces had melodies over a drone and that was an approach I have often explored in my own music. I decided to use fragments of these melodies and build up my own compositions around them; no samples of performers of mediaeval music were used, only parts from the musical notation. The pieces are not intended to sound in any way mediaeval, but make connections to the music of the past whilst sounding very much contemporary. The titles of the tracks are fragments of the original titles of the mediaeval pieces, often in Latin, in most cases I have no idea as to the translation.
